Good start after summer break
After a break of a good four weeks, the women of the Düsseldorf Senators resumed playing in the softball state league. Despite the fact that the team had to do without many players due to the summer holidays and the coaches did not have a regular catcher available, they were confident of putting in a good performance.
“The fact that all three catchers would not be present gave us a huge headache beforehand,” said head coach Frank Mohr after the game. “Filling this position adequately is of crucial importance, especially for the safety of the players.”
An infielder who was converted at short notice did more than just a good job: “We all take our hats off to this performance. What Anja showed today was really great.”
Usually playing in almost every position in the infield, it was a very special premiere for Anja; she admitted to being very nervous. “Something that you couldn’t tell at any point in the game,” summed up Patrick Mohr, and also found consistently positive words during the team meeting that followed.
“There wasn’t much to analyze. The girls gave it their all and lost against a strong team from Krefeld. That’s just how softball is. We can’t blame ourselves. Everyone did their best, we can’t expect more than that.”
The result of 3:9 from the Senators’ point of view may sound like a clear game at first glance, but it wasn’t.
“We played consistently well and made few mistakes in defense. We could have been a bit braver and cleverer at bat, but we will work on that.”
Many of the hits either landed directly in the Crows’ gloves or found no gap in the infield, so the comeback at the end of the game was not crowned with success.
“You can tell that we haven’t been able to train much and the cancellation of many games hasn’t helped us to get into the swing of things. We hope to continue to improve in the next few weeks,” Frank Mohr sums it up.
However, the increase in new players is enormous, which is a more than positive sign for the club.
“The influx this year has exceeded all our expectations and we already have inquiries for next season. Interest in our sport in the U13 age group is also growing steadily, and so we are now thinking about additional training opportunities.”
“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but that’s what we wanted.”
Before the game, there was a Ceremonial First Pitch, carried out by Jenna Davis, who launched a unique integration project with the Düsseldorf Senators.
“The collaboration with Jenna represents a milestone for us on the way to the future. Our goal is to show everyone that there are no borders in sport. We want to break down linguistic and cultural barriers and prove that everyone, regardless of origin, country or religion, can find a piece of home with us.”
